Colorado Ski Resort Lack of Powder brings out Kindness of Heart

It’s been a slow start to our ski season this year. However, the Colorado Ski Resort lack of powder this season brought communities together. In our High Country, business and churches have been helping young seasonal workers by hosting weekly hot, nutritious meals. depending on the snowfall for a paycheck.

Ski Resort Kitchens for Workers“It’s a tough time of the year for those who have come expecting to make a living and there’s no snow,” says the Rev. Claire McNulty-Drewes whose church in downtown Breckenridge has double the number of people sitting down for a free Sunday dinner.

When only a few man-made runs are open, and visitors not flocking to our slopes, a lot of ski instructors, lift operators, restaurant, and hotel workers are often on standby status – with no pay.

Aspen Skiing, an employer of over 3,500 workers each season at its four Roaring Fork ski areas doesn’t need to feed their employees every season, but when snow is low, the kitchens open. Vail and Beaver Creek have also expanded meal programs for their employees.

A Colorado Ski Resort lack of powder, coupled with the high cost of living in the resort areas can be devastating to those relying on employment from after Thanksgiving through to April. Resort workers pay sky-high rents and large deposits for accommodation when they roll into town for work.

Putting most of their savings into the deposit and first and last months’ rent can leave many very short of funds. Aspen Skiing Co came up with a great alternative. The tiny home! Affordable, stylish and what could be a real problem solver for the young people we rely on for our ski lifestyle.

This situation should reach a happy conclusion as we go further into the season. Normal, and above normal snowfall is predicted between December and March 2018. In the meantime, thank you to all the good people of the High Country for taking care of those who came to work.
