Focus on the University Neighborhood

Denver’s University neighborhood, commonly known as the “DU Neighborhood,” is a bustling community centered around the University of Denver, a well-regarded private college attracting students from across the country.

The University neighborhood is adjacent to the upscale University Park neighborhood and bounded by Downing Street to the West, I-25 to the north, University Boulevard to the east and Dartmouth and Amherst avenues to the south. The classic, historic neighborhood has the feel of a vibrant college community but it is more urban since it is located in the heart of the Denver metropolitan area.

The University neighborhood, a mix of rentals and traditional homes, is made up of young professionals, families, and of course, DU students. The great thing about living in a neighborhood centered around a college is that it is close to a plethora of dining and shopping opportunities, including popular restaurants such as Asbury Provisions, Illegal Pets, Jelly U, Crimson and Gold Tavern and Jerusalem. It is also located near South Pearl Street, one of Denver’s most popular shopping districts.

According to a profile by 9News, the area incorporated in 1886 as the town of South Denver and “the town was originally formed to restrict the creation of more saloons and road houses in the city proper, which were seen as a threat to the residential areas. It was annexed to the city of Denver in 1894.” The area continued to thrive in later decades and grew even more during the post-World War II era, due to the GI Bill.
